Type of Cardiac Condition Treated
There are many types of cardiac conditions that may be treated in a hospital, some examples include:
Coronary artery disease (CAD) – a condition in which the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, become narrowed or blocked due to a buildup of plaque.- Heart failure – a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
- Cardiomyopathy – a disease of the heart muscle that can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.
- Arrhythmias – abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia.
- Valvular heart disease – a condition in which one or more of the heart’s valves do not function properly.
- Aortic aneurysm – a bulging in the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
- Pericarditis – inflammation of the sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart.
- Pulmonary embolism – a blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in your lungs, usually caused by a blood clot.
- Rheumatic fever – a complication of strep throat that can affect the heart valves.
- Marfan syndrome – a genetic disorder that affects connective tissue throughout the body, including the heart.
- These are just some examples, there are many other cardiac conditions that can be treated in a hospital, depending on the facility’s capabilities and resources.
- Atherosclerosis – a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through them.
- Hypertensive heart disease – a condition in which high blood pressure causes damage to the heart and blood vessels.
- Mitral valve prolapse – a condition in which the mitral valve (one of the heart’s valves) doesn’t close properly.
- Aortic stenosis – a condition in which the aortic valve (the valve that separates the left ventricle from the aorta) becomes narrowed.
- Pulmonary hypertension – high blood pressure in the lungs, which can make it harder for the right side of the heart to pump blood.
- Myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart muscle that can cause chest pain and other symptoms.
- Takotsubo cardiomyopathy – a condition in which the heart muscle becomes temporarily weakened, usually in response to stress.
- Cardiac amyloidosis – a condition in which a protein called amyloid builds up in the heart, making it harder for the heart to pump blood.
- Coronary artery spasm – a temporary narrowing of one or more of the coronary arteries that can cause chest pain.
- Post-cardiac arrest – care for patient who has experienced cardiac arrest, including treatments to restore normal heart rhythm and prevent brain damage.
- Again, these are just some examples of the many cardiac conditions that may be treated in a hospital. It’s important to note that some hospitals may have specialized cardiac care units, which may be equipped to treat more complex and serious cases.
