Cardiology Department

Type of Cardiac Condition Treated

There are many types of cardiac conditions that may be treated in a hospital, some examples include:

  1. Coronary artery disease (CAD)
    – a condition in which the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, become narrowed or blocked due to a buildup of plaque.

  2. Heart failure – a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.

  3. Cardiomyopathy – a disease of the heart muscle that can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.

  4. Arrhythmias – abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia.

  5. Valvular heart disease – a condition in which one or more of the heart’s valves do not function properly.

  6. Aortic aneurysm – a bulging in the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
  7. Pericarditis – inflammation of the sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart.

  8. Pulmonary embolism – a blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in your lungs, usually caused by a blood clot.
  9. Rheumatic fever – a complication of strep throat that can affect the heart valves.
  10. Marfan syndrome – a genetic disorder that affects connective tissue throughout the body, including the heart.
  11. These are just some examples, there are many other cardiac conditions that can be treated in a hospital, depending on the facility’s capabilities and resources.

  12. Atherosclerosis – a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through them.

  13. Hypertensive heart disease – a condition in which high blood pressure causes damage to the heart and blood vessels.

  14. Mitral valve prolapse – a condition in which the mitral valve (one of the heart’s valves) doesn’t close properly.

  15. Aortic stenosis – a condition in which the aortic valve (the valve that separates the left ventricle from the aorta) becomes narrowed.

  16. Pulmonary hypertension – high blood pressure in the lungs, which can make it harder for the right side of the heart to pump blood.

  17. Myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart muscle that can cause chest pain and other symptoms.

  18. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy – a condition in which the heart muscle becomes temporarily weakened, usually in response to stress.

  19. Cardiac amyloidosis – a condition in which a protein called amyloid builds up in the heart, making it harder for the heart to pump blood.

  20. Coronary artery spasm – a temporary narrowing of one or more of the coronary arteries that can cause chest pain.

  21. Post-cardiac arrest – care for patient who has experienced cardiac arrest, including treatments to restore normal heart rhythm and prevent brain damage.
  22. Again, these are just some examples of the many cardiac conditions that may be treated in a hospital. It’s important to note that some hospitals may have specialized cardiac care units, which may be equipped to treat more complex and serious cases.
