1. Respiratory failure: ICU’s are equipped to provide mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, and other treatments for patients with respiratory failure. ICU cares for people who have life-threatening conditions, such as a serious injury or illness, where they receive around-the-clock monitoring and life support. An intensive care unit (ICU) provides the critical care and life support for acutely ill and injured patients. Unless you are an emergency admission, you will need a referral from your doctor or specialist to be admitted to ICU. . Most patients are transferred to what is called a step-down unit, where they are still very closely monitored before being transferred to a regular hospital floor and then hopefully home
